NEW! Delaware Historical and Genealogical Recall, edited and published by Matilda Spicer Hart

The Delaware Genealogy Society (DGS) has generated several printed publications of Delaware genealogical data in past years. We are now starting the process of moving many of those publications online when possible.

The Delaware Historical and Genealogical Recall of Matilda Spicer Hart is one of the first to make that transition. Originally published in four volumes between 1931 and 1933, The Recall is a collection of extracts from wills, deeds, Orphans Court records, family bibles, all from the 1700s, and sourced from, what is today known as, the Delaware Public Archives. DGS reprinted The Recall in 1984 with a full name index, compiled by Mary Fallon Richards, a DGS board member and noted genealogist.

The Name Index with 3,257 entries is now searchable in the table below. The original index has been modified to be more consistent with our other online indexes. The primary modification has been to add sequential page numbers (2-33) to the bottom of every page of the four volumes of the original Recall. We also made some corrections to the original index. Below is a reprint of the original Title and Preface of Publication #3.

About Matilda Spicer Hart

Matilda Spicer Hart (1882-1948) was a well-known writer of Delaware history. Born in Marshallton, Delaware, she lived most of her life in Dover and Rehoboth, Delaware. According to her obituaries, she was “widely known throughout the state for historic work” and “…credited with discovering many obscure facts in Delaware history.”

The Delaware Historical and Genealogical Recall (The Recall) is evidence of her dedication and meticulous work. We hope that you find this new online resource useful. She also published several other books of transcriptions and genealogical extracts, some of which are available online in FamilySearch’s Digital Library.

PREFACE

This small compilation of data from various Delaware sources was published by Mrs. Hart in 1933. It is rich in names, and very helpful, but the necessity of looking at virtually every word was a handicap to its convenient usefulness. The preparation of this index was intended to overcome that problem, and to bring the work to the attention of a larger group of researchers of Delaware families. Though Mrs. Hart is deceased, we are confident she would have approved of the addition of an index to her work.

The numbering system was chosen to accommodate the several issues of the original work now extant in various repositories, which are numbered in series of eights, if at all, rather than in a continuous 1 to 32, as would be most usual tor a work of this size.

The copy from which this work was prepared was made at the Hall of Records in Dover, Delaware, and is used here with the permission of the Delaware State Archives.
