STATEMENT
IN OBSERVANCE OF
FAMILY HISTORY MONTH

Whereas, the Delaware Genealogical Society, founded in 1977 under the auspices of the Historical Society of Delaware, has over 700 members in 42 states and has as its objective to raise the standards of genealogical research and to assist the citizens of the State of Delaware in the tracing and identification of their ancestors; and

Whereas, the Delaware Genealogical Society strives to collect, preserve and interpret genealogical information concerning the citizens of the State of Delaware through the transcription and publication of Delaware's vital records, censuses, tax lists, land deeds, court, church and cemetery records, newspaper abstracts and family histories; and

Whereas, the Delaware Genealogical Society, the Delaware Public Archives, the Historical Society of Delaware and other Delaware lineage societies provide to the citizens of Delaware the resources and facilities needed to study local history and genealogy; and

Whereas, the citizens of the State of Delaware should be encouraged to gather the family lore, customs and traditions of their ancestors, to study family history as an academic discipline and to appreciate the richness of the lives of their ancestors and the importance of the individual within the fabric of Delaware history;

Now, Therefore, We, Ruth Ann Minner, Governor, and John C. Carney, Jr., Lieutenant Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby declare the month of October, 2001

FAMILY HISTORY MONTH
in the State of Delaware, and urge all Delawareans to recognize the importance of this event by celebrating their families' heritage.
