Primary Candidates for Volume 1 of Delaware Families 1787-1800
For Volume 1, we will use the 100-150 best entries which will be judged on several criteria, primarily the quality and amount of original research with original record documentation and completeness of entry. Almost certain to be in Volume 1 are entries in Tiers #1 and #2 (see below). Those entries in Tiers #3 and #4 have very high potential to be in Volume 1.

Write-ups that are only a reformatting of material from secondary sources are less likely to be published, because no real contribution is made to the genealogical literature. An improvement would be to provide original record sources that were not reported in the secondary source. When submitting entries, therefore, secondary sources, especially undocumented ones, should be minimized by going back to the original record.

Accepted rules of evidence should be followed: "Any statement of fact that is not common knowledge must carry its own individual statement of source." [Ref: Elizabeth Shawn Mills: Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian (1997)].

Also it is helpful for the submitter to do whatever they can to save time for the volunteer committee, such as submitting an entry close to the required format and including copies of documentation, thus minimizing the committee's need to research for missing information and to confirm submitted information. We will also give some consideration to a statewide balance of entries and to try to include at least one entry from each submitter, providing quality requirements are met.

Except for Tier #1 there is no guarantee that any entry will appear in Volume 1,
but those listed in Tier #2 are almost certain and those in Tiers #3 and #4 are likely. Those entries ranked lower need more work. We encourage all submitters to upgrade their entries. Even though we have enough entries for volume 1, we are still accepting new entries which could displace some of the ones we now have, as could some of the entries in Tiers #5 and #6, if they are substantially upgraded. Delaware Families 1787-1800 is a multi-volume project, so those entries that don't make the first volume will still have a chance to make volume 2.

New entries meeting Delaware Families 1787-1800 criteria are still eligible to be included in volume one. The philosophy of priorization when choosing entries for volume one is:

1. The entry is very well documented and contains substantial unpublished original record research.
Secondary sources are limited mainly to grandchildren or to children who moved out of Delaware
and vicinity.

2. The entry is fairly complete, containing substantial parent, grandparent and children information
and, to a somewhat lesser extent, grandchildren information.

3. Entries of comparable quality to others in its tier, but much less complete,
are marked with an asterick (*).

Tier Structure
Tier #1 - ready for publication, except for final proofreading - any upgrades, additions (such as more grandparent or grandchildren information) or corrections are welcome up to the time volume one is indexed (probably in late-2000).

Tier #2 - almost Tier #1, but needs a little research (up to 10 missing sources and/or secondary sources that need converting into original record sources); also includes some early entries submitted in a previously required format that now need reformatting.

Tier #3 - a previous Tier #4 entry which now has a writeup coordinator assigned who is working with submitter so that there is an acceptable source citation for each and every event and relationship [next Tier is #1, #2 or #4 (if key sources aren't found)].

Tier #4 - substantial original record documentation; most all secondary sources are of high quality and most others are limited to grandchildren sections - top priority for assignment of a write-up coordinator to the entry.

Tier #5 - like Tier# 4, but more documentation is missing and less is from original record sources and more from secondary sources, including some high quality ones; awaiting assignment of a write-up coordinator to the entry after all entries in Tier #4 are assigned.

Tier #6 - like Tier #5, but very little, if any, original record documentation or much documentation is missing or of questionable or unknown quality in most all sections; needs extensive additions, modifications and documentation. Also included in this Tier are entries that contain no more information than could be included with the father's or child's section of a higher rated entry and entries where focus person's residency in Delaware 1787-1800 is not yet proven. Some of these are not really an entry, but just somewhat more information than would be included in a registration. A write-up coordinator will be assigned to help only when a more complete entry is submitted that meets Delaware Families criteria of a higher Tier or after all entries in Tier #5 are assigned.

Future entries that meet Tier #4 criteria and are received in time (deadline sometime in mid-2001) are also likely to be used in volume 1.

The rate determining step of the Delaware Families process is the interaction between the submitter and the write-up coordinator, but it is an essential part of our process to insure the quality of every entry that gets published. Since we have relatively few write-up coordinators, the publishing date of our first volume keeps getting pushed back. If you feel you might want to be a write-up coordinator, please see Delaware Family Tasks for a full description of the task.

The focus person's name appears below as it does in the proof of residency statement, not necessarily how it "normally" appeared or how it will be alphabetized in Delaware Families 1787-1800.

Tier #1: 25 Focus Person Writeups ready for publication in Volume 1
except for final proofreading - any upgrades, additions (such as more grandparent or grandchildren information) or corrections are welcome up to the time Volume 1 is indexed (probably in mid-2002).

Tier #6: 26 Focus Persons Draft Writeups That Could Be Upgraded For Volume 1
like Tier #5, but very little, if any, original record sources or much documentation is missing or of questionable or unknown quality in most all sections; needs extensive additions, modifications and documentation.

Tier #7 (old Tier #4): future entries that meet Tier #4 criteria and are received in time for volume 1
(deadline early 2002)

Conclusion: It is not too late to submit an entry for volume 1. While Tier #1 and #2 entries are almost certain to appear in volume 1, new entries (if of sufficient quality) can displace write-ups in Tiers #4 and below.

Otherwise, there's always volume 2.

* entry of sufficient quality for its tier, but of lower priority because it is not as not as complete as other entries in the same tier (lacks substantial parent, grandparent, children and grandchildren information.)

** These entries were in Tier #3, but efforts to significantly upgrade documentation have thus far been unsuccessfull.

*** 1800 census categories (male and Female): <10, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45+; slaves M,F

Why is My Ancestor Not Listed?

The most frequently asked question we receive is from people saying that they just can't believe that their ancestor is not slated for volume #1 of the Delaware Families 1787-1800 project because their ancestor was a very prominent and wealthy man during that time period. Our answer is that it doesn't matter at all if your ancestor was famous or infamous, a slave or a slave owner, wealthy or poor, a farmer, common laborer, merchant or criminal. What only matters is if someone (like you) has submitted a qualified high quality well-documented entry on them.
